Harriet Baskas Visits Prince Rupert

Recently, writer Harriet Baskas visited Prince Rupert. Harriet writes for USATODAY.com, MSNBC.com, as well as her blog Stuck at the Airport. One of Harriet’s interests is unique airports, which we definitely have in Prince Rupert.

The Prince Rupert Airport (YPR) is located on Digby Island, separated from the city by approximately nine kilometers of water and land. The Digby Island ferry connects the city to its airport. Upon landing at YPR, you will board a bus, which takes you aboard the Digby Island Ferry. When the ferry arrives in Prince Rupert, the bus will bring you to the drop off location, the Highliner Plaza Hotel & Conference Centre. If you are traveling out of Prince Rupert, the bus will pick you up from the Highliner Plaza Hotel & Conference Centre.

Why is isn’t the airport located in Prince Rupert you might ask? In the 1950’s, after spending 4 years searching for an ideal location for YPR, it was decided that it would have to be build on a separate island due to the landscape in Prince Rupert. The airport opened in 1961.
